Improving the Gold Book one definition at a time...

The corpus of IUPAC Recommendations contains definitions of thousands of chemistry concepts authored by professional chemists across the globe. The 'Term Review System' (TRS) allows project members of IUPAC Divisions to review, update and approve definitions already part of the IUPAC Gold Book and definitions in IUPAC Recommendations approved since 2006. Once approved through ICTNS, these definitions will be included/updated in the IUPAC Gold Book.

The Review Process

With the scale of this project it is clear that it needs planning and coordination. The following are the general steps that IUPAC Divisions will take to go through the process of updating entries (terms) from their Division.

  1. Assignment of recommendations to Divisions
  2. Preliminary review of entries from recommendations
  3. Formal online (this system) review of entries and assignment of decision

Resources for Divisions

Step 1 The spreadsheets sent out to Divisions (March 2021) describing the recommendations that are already referenced in the Gold Book and those from 2006 are linked below.

Step 2 The Division specific files initially made available via the Gold Book Updater website have now been moved here. Click on your Division page (left) to get access to these files

Step 3 Once a Division has completed Step 2 they will identify project members that are authorized to use this website to go through the review of entries and designate the status of each one. Once each entry from a recommendation has been reviewed and assigned a status by project members in the TRS, those designated to be added to the Gold Book, will go for further review/approval. Documentation on this process and the features of the TRS site will be made available soon.
